Gone are the days when playing the piano was enough to keep you busy. As a breed, today’s keyboard players are now well versed in all kinds of electronic gadgetry. We’ve become programmers, technicians and all round geeks.
My ever-growing collection of keyboards and synths, some vintage, is a testament to 30 years of musical growth and a strained bank balance. Having the right instrument for the job is vital. I’ve played for many of the UK’s pop stars of the 70s and 80s so getting the right sound is everything.
But I still love to come back to the piano, especially with Jazz. It’s where I started and it’s where I’m most comfortable and happy. My years as a Roland clinician allowed me to spread my wings as a pianist having played all over the world as a soloist.
