John has always enjoyed the challenges and demands of education. Regrettably a busy performing work schedule only allows for a handful of personal students nowadays. He has taught everything from classical, pop, rock and jazz. His understanding of music technology combined with his piano and presentation skills have also been called upon on many occasions.
Thames Valley University
John has taught, at London College of Music, arranging, orchestration and composition to Postgraduate MMus students over the last few years. He was asked to create course content and coach the students through an intensive year of studies.
John has acted as a consultant for the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) on various projects. He was one of 3 consultants on the Music Medals www.musicmedals.org syllabus led by Nigel Scaiffe. This focused on ensemble playing where students were assessed in part by videoed performances. He also contributed to some of the syllabus repertoire having especially composed and arranged some of the pieces.
(Violin Star Books)
John was also invited to arrange and record audio backing tracks for the Violin Star series of books. The repertoire concentrates on specific techniques through an exciting and inspirational range of musical styles and pieces. All his arrangements were recorded in his studio at home.
John was also involved with the publishing division of the ABRSM in the development of Smart Music files www.smartmusic.com. Smart Music is a clever piece of software that listens and gives instant feedback to a students performance, regardless of the instrument. The technical challenges in creating the music files at that time were demanding but the end results rewarding.
In 2012 - Roland formed an association with Pianist Magazine and invited John to script and perform in a series of tutorial videos aimed at helping beginner piano students with their practicing. Every 2 months a new collection of videos is filmed, edited and uploaded both to You Tube and the Pianist Magazine site - at the same time a new edition is published to coincide with the sheet music that comes with the magazine https://www.pianistmagazine.com/Information/Pianist-TV. John has also included some of his own arrangements and compositions in these videos.
Thanks to Roland, John has travelled the world extolling the virtues of music technology in education. Whilst focused mainly on the digital pianos and the many helpful features they contain that can enhance the learning process, he has had the chance to meet many teachers all over the world. John actually had a collection of his songs published in volume called 'The Musical Picture Book' (image inc). Sadly no longer available as a collection. However all the music from this publication will become available soon at http://www.scoreexchange.com/profiles/johnmaul.
